Funding, review procedure and application

In alignment with the implementation of its Excellence Strategy, funded by federal and state governments, the University of Hamburg has been supporting knowledge exchange projects since 2021 through a (start-up) financing of up to 30,000 EUR each, enriched by a support program provided by the Co-Creation & Engagement Center. This program consists of two internal workshops for strategic input and mutual exchange (Kick-Off & Mid-Term), a public event—ideally as part of a larger regional event—to showcase and discuss the results, and a writing workshop to draft the final report in the form of a Societal Impact Story (SIS). Active participation in the internal workshops and the public presentation of results is expected.

The process for awarding grants from the Knowledge Exchange Fund takes place on an annual basis; the next cycle will run from January 1 to December 31, 2027. In the future, the Knowledge Exchange Fund will always be named after the year of funding; in this case, it is called the “Knowledge Exchange Fund 2027.”

Applicants must have an employment contract with the University of Hamburg that runs at least until the end of the funding period. Additional project members can be funded by the Knowledge Exchange Fund e.g. through augmentations, service contracts, or student assistant positions. However, new hires are not possible due to the short funding period. Besides personnel costs, material resources can also be applied for.

After a formal review, the submitted applications are first comparatively assessed by external scientists with knowledge exchange expertise and then evaluated by members of the university’s Knowledge Exchange Advisory Board.

Knowledge Exchange Fund 2025 – Triple Transformation. Digital, Sustainable, Open!

Twin Transformation is one of the strategic priorities of Universität Hamburg. This approach aims to advance sustainability goals using digital technologies and data while also ensuring that technologies, data resources, and (social) infrastructures are designed sustainably. Building on its transfer profile "Triple E: Expertise – Engagement – Entrepreneurship", Knowledge Exchange at the University of Hamburg means to pursue and strengthen Twin Transformation also through co-creation and co-innovation. It supports collaboration and innovation with stakeholders for sustainable development, promotes a broad understanding of sustainability in line with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (ecological, economic, social, and ethical), thrives on the diversity of academic cultures, and is implemented across all faculties in a considerable variety of expressions. Therefore, the explicit goal of our Knowledge Exchange strategy is Triple Transformation: digital, sustainable, and open!

In light of the complexity of the tasks ahead regarding Triple Transformation, we invited submissions for the current call of the Knowledge Exchange Fund that undertake shared responsibility for sustainable development in partnership with various relevant stakeholders, utilizing digital technologies.

Strengthening cooperation between scientific and non-scientific stakeholders is an important focus in view of the current social challenges. 8 projects are currently being funded that provide research-based knowledge exchange in very different ways.

Knowledge Exchange Fund 2024 – Knowledge Exchange in studies and teaching

Strengthening cooperation between scientific and non-scientific stakeholders is an important focus in view of the current social challenges. With a view to the HBdV annual conference (September 18-20, 2024 in Hamburg), 15 projects are currently being funded that provide research-based knowledge exchange in very different ways. This time, we were looking for project ideas that focus on learning and teaching formats in which non-university stakeholders play an active role, whether as a real-world laboratory, service learning, community research, social entrepreneurship education or similar.

Knowledge Exchange Fund 2023 – Engaged in research, researching with engagement

Strengthening cooperation between scientific and non-scientific stakeholders is an important focus in view of the current social challenges. With a view to the Forum Citizen Science (October 9-10, 2024 in Hamburg), 13 projects (pdf-download) are currently being funded that provide research-based knowledge exchange in very different ways. Knowledge Exchange Fund 2022 – Urban Society on the Move: Sustainable healthy living!

The aim of this call was to initiate transfer projects that get citizens moving and thus make a sustainable contribution to health. In the run-up to the Sports, Medicine and Health Summit (June 22-24, 2023 in Hamburg), 13 projects are currently being funded that provide research-based transfer around the topics of exercise, sports, medicine and nutrition in very different ways. Knowledge Exchange Fund 2021 – The New Normal

Professors, academic staff and students at the Universität Hamburg have applied for the Knowledge Exchange Fund 2021 with a total of 29 project ideas for funding of up to 30,000 euros per project. In line with the 2021 thematic focus "The New Normal: Sustainable Development in Pandemic Times" (PDF), 12 projects from five faculties were funded. The funded knowledge exchange projects are described on the page "Knowledge Exchange Projects Overview" (which will be added to gradually).

Knowledge Exchange Fund 2020 – More foresight after the coronavirus crisis

In 2020, knowledge exchange projects were funded for the first time with the university Knowledge Exchange Fund. Thirteen research projects were supported with up to 10,000 euros to investigate the new type of coronavirus and its health, economic or social consequences. The aim of the knowledge exchange projects was to develop research-based ways of overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic in the long term, in line with the guiding principle of "innovating and cooperating for a sustainable future".

The funded knowledge exchange projects marked the start of the university-wide Corona portfolio, in which more than 50 research projects at the Universität Hamburg now provide an insight into the diverse Corona research.
